On a chilly Friday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Audi conducted a crucial filming day to gather initial data with their brand-new R26 machine. This event, which took place 17 days before the official pre-season test, was a closely guarded secret, with the team eager to keep its progress under wraps.
Fans got a sneak peek thanks to social media, capturing images of the R26, cloaked in a sleek all-black livery, tearing around the track. Audi was limited to a maximum of 200 kilometers (equivalent to 42 laps) of running during this first of two permitted filming days. The driving duties were shared between Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, giving both drivers a valuable first taste of the 2026 car.
Audi themselves celebrated this moment, calling it a "milestone moment" on social media. They shared their excitement, saying, "We're officially rolling. First day. First laps. First chance for our drivers to experience the car. The road ahead starts right here."
Hulkenberg also shared his enthusiasm, acknowledging the team's rapid progress: "9th of January 2026 & the rings are rolling. Fantastic effort Audi F1." Bortoleto echoed the sentiment, expressing his joy at the beginning of this journey.
But here's where it gets interesting: Audi's official launch of the R26 is scheduled for January 20 in Berlin, just six days before the start of the behind-closed-doors test in Barcelona. Teams will only have a maximum of three days to test during the five-day test, which runs from January 26-30.
Following this, two more pre-season tests will be held in Bahrain, from February 11-13 and 18-20. The F1 2026 season will then kick off with the Australian Grand Prix on March 8.
This early start could give Audi a significant advantage.
