Brace yourself, Bristol! Your airport drop-off fees are about to skyrocket. But is this a necessary evil or a step too far?
The Bristol Airport drop-off charges are set to increase by a staggering £1.50, adding to a series of annual hikes. From Monday onwards, a mere 10-minute drop-off at the terminal's Drop Off & Pick Up car park or the nearby Short Stay car park will set you back a hefty £8.50. And that's not all. The Minibus and Over Height car park rates are also on the rise, with five minutes of parking jumping from £7 to £8.50, and five to 20 minutes increasing from £9 to £10.50.
The airport spokesperson attributed this latest surge to Chancellor Rachel Reeves' budget, claiming it will lead to a significant hike in their business rates bill. But the Treasury has a different take, emphasizing that they've provided a substantial £4.2bn support package to cap business rates, and that airports must adhere to consumer law and justify their charges.
Here's where it gets controversial: the airport argues that the price increase is a necessary measure to protect jobs and improve customer experience, while also working towards net zero targets by 2030. Interestingly, the airport hopes the higher fees will discourage people from using the drop-off car park, encouraging them to opt for public transport instead. The Bristol Airport Flyer bus service is one alternative, with fares starting at £7 for an adult return ticket. Additionally, a free shuttle bus service from the waiting zone is available, with plans to double its capacity.
But here's the catch: while these alternatives exist, they may not be convenient for everyone, especially those with mobility issues or heavy luggage. And for Blue Badge holders, the increased drop-off fee of £8.50 for up to 40 minutes might still be a bitter pill to swallow.
