China's Chery Auto Group is making waves in the UK automotive market with the introduction of its fourth brand, Lepas. This move comes as a strategic expansion of the company's presence in Europe, following the successful launches of Omoda, Jaecoo, and the Chery brand in the past two years. The new brand is set to revolutionize the market with its 'new energy vehicles,' a term encompassing plug-in hybrids and electric cars, catering to the European market's evolving preferences.
The name 'Lepas' is a clever combination of 'leopard,' 'leap,' and 'passion,' reflecting the brand's dynamic and forward-thinking approach. The upcoming UK launch will introduce the L4 and L6 crossovers, designed on the T1X modular platform, which is also used in the Omoda 5, Jaecoo 5, and Jaecoo 7 models. These vehicles will feature soft-edged designs inspired by Chery's Tiggo models and established European brands like Audi.
However, Chery's management is mindful of potential brand cannibalization. The company's president, Zhang Guibing, highlighted this concern during the Lepas launch, presenting a slide titled 'Too many brands?' This question underscores the delicate balance Chery must maintain as it expands its brand portfolio.
The Tiggo models will undergo a transformation, adopting a chunkier design to appeal to traditional family buyers. Meanwhile, Omoda will embrace a more aggressive style, incorporating polygonal elements in its upcoming 3 crossover. By offering different brands on the same platform, Chery aims to achieve economies of scale, resulting in competitive pricing.
Chery's rapid growth in the UK market is evident. Last year, Omoda, Jaecoo, and Chery collectively secured a 2.65% share of the UK's new car market, surpassing brands like Mini, Tesla, and BYD. With the introduction of Lepas and the expansion of its other brands, Chery is poised to challenge market giants such as Renault, Skoda, and Kia, solidifying its position as a key player in the UK automotive industry.
