Hiking the Bigelow Range: West Peak, South Horn, and Avery Peak (2026)

Today's adventure takes us to the Bigelow Mountains, a slow-paced morning that sets the tone for a challenging yet rewarding hike.

The journey begins with a leisurely start, allowing for a much-needed rest after a restless night. I fueled up with a hearty breakfast, including my secret weapon - an energy drink - to ensure I was ready for the climb ahead.

The Climb to Bigelow West Peak

The first few miles were a gentle warm-up, but the real test began with a steep ascent. Over five and a half miles, I gained 3600 feet in elevation, a true test of endurance. The climb was a grind, especially with a heavy pack, but the views started to open up, revealing Horns Pond and the distant Sugarloaf Mountain.

I took a moment to chat with some fellow hikers, Bucky and Shooter, and enjoyed a well-deserved rest in the sun. However, water sources proved to be a challenge, with some springs reduced to puddles due to recent rains. It's a reminder of the importance of planning and the unexpected challenges nature can present.

The hike up to the South Horn was steep but brief, rewarding me with stunning views to the east. I felt a sense of accomplishment as I reached the highest peak of the day, Bigelow West Peak, and took in the panoramic views in all directions, including a glimpse of a vast lake to the west.

Descending and Discoveries

The descent from Bigelow West Peak was steep and rocky, a real test of my endurance and navigation skills. I ran into a fellow hiker, and we shared stories of our journeys so far.

As I continued, I discovered a hidden gem - a spring box with cool, clear water, a welcome surprise after being told it was dry. It's these little discoveries that make hiking so rewarding, and I was grateful for the unexpected refreshment.

Evening at the Shelter

The final stretch to the shelter was a challenge, with fatigue setting in. I arrived just as darkness fell, and the area was bustling with tents - a mix of Girl Scouts, thru-hikers, and section hikers. It was a lively atmosphere, but I managed to find a spot to pitch my tent, a little cramped but perfect for the night.

I hydrated and fueled up, grateful for the day's achievements and the comfort of my tent.

Stats and Reflections

Day 143 Stats:
- Distance: 15.3 miles
- Ascent: 5,118 feet
- Descent: 4,724 feet
- Location: ME Route 27 to Little Bigelow Lean-to

This hike was a true test of endurance, and I'm proud of my achievements. The Bigelow Mountains offered a unique challenge, and the views were a constant reward. It's these experiences that make hiking such a captivating pursuit, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

What makes this journey particularly fascinating is the constant interplay between the physical challenge and the rewards of nature's beauty. It's a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are the ones that push us to our limits.
