IndiGo Pays Rs 500 Crore+ to Severely Stranded Passengers: Full Details on Compensation (2026)

IndiGo has announced that the compensation pool for affected customers is likely to surpass Rs 500 crore. The airline stated that passengers whose flights were cancelled within 24 hours of departure and those who were left stranded at various airports across the country will be eligible for refunds and related compensation, with the total amount currently estimated to exceed Rs 500 crore.

In a statement posted on X, IndiGo emphasized its aim to make the refund process transparent, straightforward, and hassle-free for customers. The airline also noted that it is identifying flights where passengers faced severe disruption on December 3–5 and will contact all affected customers in January to facilitate smooth compensation payments.

IndiGo reiterated its commitment to prompt refunds, stating that most refunds have already been issued and the remaining ones will be processed shortly.

The carrier also highlighted that, on the day in question, it operated more than 2,000 flights across the country as part of an adjusted schedule aimed at restoring normal operations. The airline reported that nearly all 138 operational destinations are interconnected, with on-time performance returning to its standard levels.

Earlier reports indicated that IndiGo had operated around 1,950 flights the previous day, with only a handful of same-day cancellations attributed to weather, and passengers were notified promptly to minimize inconvenience.

To investigate the disruption more thoroughly, IndiGo has engaged Chief Aviation Advisors LLC, led by Captain John Illson, to conduct a root-cause analysis of the recent operational disturbances that affected thousands of travelers, particularly in major city hubs.

Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) summoned IndiGo chief executive Pieter Elbers to discuss the widespread flight cancellations and delays. In light of these events, the DGCA has stepped up its scrutiny of the airline and announced measures to help ensure smoother operations going forward.
