Jhye Richardson's Speed Return: Test Cricket Comeback Story | Ashes Highlights (2026)

After a grueling 1,468-day absence, Jhye Richardson made a triumphant return to Test cricket at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. But what drove this comeback?

Like a seasoned gunslinger, Richardson's eyes were constantly glued to his primary weapon: speed. He, like the legendary Brett Lee and countless other fast bowlers, was fixated on the electronic scoreboard, eagerly awaiting the number that would flash after each delivery. It wasn't about the game's state; it was about the velocity of his thunderbolts.

"Every ball," Richardson confessed with a grin, revealing a habit he'd developed during his Test return. Lee, recently inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, shared the same obsession, drawing playful comments from his former captain, Ricky Ponting.

Having played his first Test in four years, Richardson understands that his pace is a major asset. But he also knows it's a key metric by which he'll be judged. He's been carefully managed by Cricket Australia after undergoing his third shoulder surgery earlier this year, fast-tracked to the highest level.

Before the Boxing Day Test, Richardson was measured during Australia's training sessions in Perth and Adelaide. Assistant coaches even used a handheld speed gun, a rare sight in Aussie net sessions, to provide "instant feedback" on his pace.

In his first innings, Richardson's speeds were in the low 130s (kilometers per hour), peaking at 136.2 kph. He found it "frustrating" as he struggled with his run-up and faced a headwind. But here's where it gets controversial... his senior teammates, Mitch Starc and Scott Boland, were operating from the more favorable end of the ground.

In the second innings, Richardson found his rhythm. He took the wicket of Brydon Carse, his first Test wicket in nearly 1,500 days. Bowling from downwind, he took 1-8 from 2.2 overs, including the wicket of Joe Root.

"At the end there when I managed to get the end with a bit of a better breeze, I felt like I was in a lot better rhythm," Richardson said. "I was able to pull down a little bit more and my speed jumped up a little bit."

His fastest ball was clocked at 141.7 kph, with his goal being to be "consistently around that 140 kph mark."

The two-day Test was a whirlwind for Richardson. After learning of his selection at 9 pm on Christmas evening, he ensured his parents had a flight from Perth to Melbourne. A few hours later, he was singing the national anthem in front of a record MCG crowd of over 94,500 fans.

Travis Head, a teammate in all of Richardson's four Tests, was impressed by the speed of his return, considering his limited competitive matches since surgery. "It's been a long road back for him," Head said. "He's come back quickly. We all know how talented and how skillful he is."

Richardson, though feeling the effects of his 9 overs, is hopeful for selection in the New Year's Test in Sydney. The speed gun will be ready, but Head won't be facing him.
