The San Francisco 49ers' quarterback, Brock Purdy, has been making waves with his pinpoint accuracy, and it's no wonder why. Kyle Shanahan, the team's head coach, has been coaching quarterbacks for 18 years, and he's seen them all. But when it comes to placing the ball in the perfect spot, Purdy stands out above the rest.
'I'm not going to say anyone's better than Brock at it,' Shanahan said, praising his quarterback's ability to layer balls. 'That's probably one of Brock's best things. He can really drop it in a bucket.'
Purdy's on-target percentage of 77.8% in the 2025 season is a career-high, and it's not just about the numbers. It's about the precision and the trust he instills in his receivers. Even if they don't catch every pass, Purdy is giving them the best shot.
'The guys can be deep, and if there's a way to get it over that [defender] and bring it down before you sail it over a receiver, he's going to do that and he doesn't miss it very much,' Shanahan explained.
This skill is a key part of Purdy's game, and Shanahan is using it to his advantage in playcalling. But it's not just about the statistics and the coaching. It's about the moments that make a difference, like the first drive of the wild-card win over the Philadelphia Eagles, where Purdy hit wide receiver DeMarcus Robinson with pinpoint throws, one going for 61 yards and the other capping the drive with a touchdown.
Now, Purdy looks to redeem himself against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Divisional round rematch. In the regular-season finale, he completed 19 of 27 passes for just 127 yards. But with a defense that nabbed 18 interceptions this season, the fifth-most in the NFL, the 49ers quarterback will have his work cut out for him.
So, what do you think? Is Purdy's accuracy a result of coaching, natural talent, or a combination of both? Let us know in the comments below!
