Lower Speed Limit on Grafton Street: What Changed and Why (2026)

A bold move for safer roads: Slowing down on Grafton Street, Grenfell.

In a bid to enhance safety for all road users and local residents, Transport for NSW has decided to lower the speed limit on a crucial stretch of the Mid Western Highway near Grenfell. This decision comes after a resident raised concerns about the existing 80 km/h zone, highlighting the need for a safer environment when accessing homes along Grafton Street.

The review, conducted by Transport for NSW, considered various factors such as location, crash history, road conditions, access points, usage patterns, and traffic volumes. Damien Pfeiffer, Executive Director of Partnerships and Integration West, explained that the review area, spanning 500 meters, includes four frequently used accesses. The assessment revealed that the Safe Intersection Sight Distances (SISD) for these accesses were not adequate for an 80 km/h zone but met the recommended standards for a 50 km/h zone.

"The recommendation is to extend the existing 50 km/h speed limit for vehicles heading west out of Grenfell by 500 meters, creating a safer corridor for residents and road users alike," Pfeiffer stated.

But here's where it gets controversial: some may argue that a 50 km/h zone is an extreme measure. However, Transport for NSW stands by its decision, emphasizing that the lower speed limit will not only reduce the likelihood of crashes but also minimize the severity of any potential incidents.

And this is the part most people miss: the change will only add a mere 13 seconds to the average trip through Grenfell. Local police and Weddin Shire Council have given their support to this initiative, recognizing the potential benefits to the community.

So, what do you think? Is this a necessary step towards safer roads, or an unnecessary slowdown? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below! Remember, you can also sign up to receive updates and propose reviews for your area.
