Timothée Chalamet’s newest film, "Marty Supreme," is making headlines for breaking box office records even before its official release on Christmas Day.
Directed by Josh Safdie, known for his work on "Uncut Gems," this A24 sports drama showcases Chalamet in the role of Marty Mauser, who aspires to become a champion in the world of table tennis. The film also features Gwyneth Paltrow, marking one of her return performances since she shifted her focus to her lifestyle brand, Goop.
Ahead of its wider release set for Thursday, this highly anticipated film has already garnered critical acclaim, currently boasting an impressive 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Over the past weekend, it had a limited opening in just six theaters located in New York and Los Angeles, which were sold out. According to Deadline, the movie is projected to bring in approximately $875,000 over the three-day period from this limited run.
This figure breaks down to an average of $145,900 per screen, setting the record for the highest per-screen average in 2025. Previously, Wes Anderson’s "Phoenician Scheme" held the record with a total of $570,000 across six theaters, averaging $95,000 per screen.
Additionally, "Marty Supreme" has achieved A24’s highest per-screen average ever, surpassing the previous record held by Safdie's own "Uncut Gems," which had an average of $107,448.
In terms of historical context, the film now ranks 15th for the best per-screen average of any movie ever released, trailing behind blockbuster hits such as "La La Land," "Frozen," "Toy Story 2," and Disney's 1994 classic, "The Lion King."
Critics are praising Chalamet’s performance as potentially his best to date, with Clarisse Loughrey from The Independent awarding it four stars and describing it as a “powder keg of a ping-pong movie,” reinforcing Chalamet's status as one of today's most talented actors. There’s already speculation that he could receive his third Oscar nomination for Best Actor at the upcoming 2026 Academy Awards. He previously earned nominations for "Call Me By Your Name" in 2018 and for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s biopic, "A Complete Unknown."
Chalamet has shared that he dedicated six years to preparing for his role as Marty, collaborating with a coach to hone his table tennis skills. "They got me to a level where I could make it look good and precise," he explained in an interview with ABC News. Moreover, he reflected on his current approach to filmmaking, emphasizing the importance of perspective and authorship, while also expressing a desire for the success of the film. "I want everything to win," he stated.
"Marty Supreme" will be available in U.S. theaters starting Christmas Day and will debut in the U.K. on Boxing Day.
