Is this the end of the road, or just a bend? Neal Schon of Journey recently stirred the pot, leading fans to wonder about the band's future. He's set to appear on the Season 28 finale of NBC's The Voice on December 16th, but the lineup has raised eyebrows.
Initial reports suggested a full Journey performance, but Schon clarified that he'd be joined by drummer Deen Castronovo, bassist Todd Jensen, and second keyboardist Jason Derlatka – without Jonathan Cain or Arnel Pineda. This sparked immediate speculation and rumors.
Schon quickly addressed the situation, stating, "Just so there’s no confusion, this is no way is meant to make it look like Jonathan or Arnel are not in the band any longer. They could not make The Voice. I'm simply going there with Deen, Todd and Jason to promote our upcoming tour and have some fun!"
So, what's the real story? Journey has announced their Final Frontier Tour for 2026 across North America. But here's where it gets controversial: Schon has also been working on trademarking the name "Journey Beyond" for a potential offshoot band.
Schon himself has hinted at the future, saying, "The legacy and the heart of the band I have within myself. I've been here since day one, and wherever I go, the heart and soul of the band is going to go with me. Journey goes on." He describes "Journey Beyond" as "Journey plus Beyond."
But is this a farewell or a new beginning? The Final Frontier Tour will begin with a 60-stop North American leg starting in February and running through July. Schon promises more dates to be announced. He says, "While this marks a farewell to one powerful chapter of the Journey we've shared, I want everyone to know I'm not done. Music is still burning strong inside me, and there are new creative horizons ahead. This tour is both a thank you and the beginning of what's next."
Journey's history is filled with iconic moments. Songs like "Lights" and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" predate Jonathan Cain's time in the band. Schon co-wrote the anthem "Don't Stop Believin'" with Cain and former frontman Steve Perry.
What do you think? Is "Journey Beyond" a natural evolution, or a sign of further divisions? Will you be attending the Final Frontier Tour? Share your thoughts in the comments!
