Modern languages, history of art, classics, and music have become more accessible, with offer rates almost doubling for some subjects in a decade. This shift in preference has made these fields more competitive, as students increasingly seek STEM-related courses. Conversely, the odds have turned against those aspiring to study computer science, mathematics, and biomedical sciences, with offer rates dwindling to as low as 6% for economics and 10% for law.
The application process is a complex affair, with families often seeking expert guidance to optimize their children's chances. Oxbridge Applications, a Westminster-based consultancy, offers private consultations, mini-mock admissions tests, and interviews for £395. However, Tom Moon, the head of consultancy, advises against applying to courses solely based on the odds, emphasizing the importance of genuine interest and passion.
The data reveals a stark contrast in offer rates for similar courses. For instance, the pure economics course at Cambridge boasts an offer rate of approximately 12%, compared to 6% for the Oxford equivalent. Similarly, the Oxford materials science course, often unknown to prospective applicants, has an offer rate almost twice as high as the Oxford physics course.
The analysis highlights significant variations in offer rates depending on the college. Oxford's Magdalen College, founded in 1458, received 1,257 applications for 129 places in 2024, resulting in a 10% success rate. In contrast, Cambridge's Murray Edwards, established in 1954, has become more accessible since 2014 after expanding its place capacity, achieving a 42% success rate.
The pressure to secure an Oxbridge place can lead to strategic decisions, with students sometimes switching between related humanities subjects based on offer rates.
