Stay Healthy This Winter: Tips from Cornwall's Everyday Champions (2026)

A winter health push in Cornwall aims to help residents stay well during the colder months.

The initiative, from NHS Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, centers on “winter wellbeing everyday champions” and shows how friends, families, and the broader community can support people living with long-term conditions while staying healthy overall.

Health bosses are also encouraging eligible residents to get their winter vaccines, including flu, Covid, RSV, pneumococcal, and shingles.

Paul Sweet, who manages diabetes and is featured in the campaign, noted: “Living with diabetes means I must take care of myself, particularly during the festive season. If we look after ourselves, we can, in turn, help the NHS further down the line.”

The campaign provides guidance on staying warm, safeguarding mental health, and staying connected and active.

Aisling Crombie, NHS Cornwall’s director of nursing, explained that individuals with long-term conditions helped create and feature in five films (https://www.youtube.com/@CIOSICB/shorts) that share personal experiences.

“For our 2025/26 winter campaign, we’re inviting local communities to contribute practical, easy-to-follow advice,” she said. “These films offer tips on living well with diabetes, lung conditions, or heart conditions, empowering people to take concrete steps to protect their health and wellbeing.”

Clare Dawe, who has lived with Type 1 diabetes for 15 years, added: “Over the years, I’ve learned a lifestyle that works for people with my condition. It’s meaningful to share that knowledge, because looking after your own health matters, but so does looking out for those around you.”

Dr. Tom Hackett, GP partner at Penryn Surgery, emphasized the community role: “Our communities are essential for helping locals stay healthy. Across Cornwall, a network of community hubs provides support, connection, and practical help that can make a real difference long before someone needs NHS care.”
